"We Can't Help" Often Takes the Most Time

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing "sometimes we can't help takes the most time". I am making this video sort of in follow up to a prior video I did clarifying issues surrounding free consultations here in Thailand. The reason I want to make it is we got some criticisms on there and some folks saying, in fact I believe in one thing I was called arrogant, well I am not arrogant, I hope that comes across. I have made approximately 4,500 videos for free explaining things associated with Thai Immigration, US Immigration, the interaction between the legal systems of these two countries', the current situation involving the economy here etc, etc. Not really worried about that whole arrogant criticism. I could be called pompous, I will take that one but arrogant, I don't think so.

In any event the reason I wanted to make this video is I kind of wanted to get across a point that I don't think people get when we talk about the initial free consultation which is basically a communication stating "can we assist in this case or not". What people I think don't really understand is when I am conferring with the gals on my information desk here, and to be clear the person that answers our phone by and large is going to be male, so when I talk about the women I am working with in the office, I am not talking about the person that answers our phone, the person that answers our phone is a male. In fact he is helping me right now in this room while I am making this video and because I can't be near the phone and neither can anybody else at the moment because they are all working. So yeah that person is not on the information desk here for when we receive correspondence from folks about needing assistance. Oftentimes I will get a couple of these a week usually, where we have to sit down, see what somebody wants and see if we can do it. Sometimes that is an easy email, oftentimes people say "hey can you help me with a European Visa?" Yeah no, we don't do that, we just say hey we can't help with that, we don't do anything with that. But sometimes, it is a really complex thing or it is a case that is going to end up involving in our estimation a great deal of time and experience, well time and experience but time and resources to be put in the case and eventually we may come back and oftentimes this will take me a few hours in conference with some of the Attorneys here in the firm, with the folks on the information desk, sometimes we have to confer with our coordinators who deal with Immigration matters, and accounting matters only to say we can't help and that really is the crux of the free consultation, the initial free consultation. I do know that a lot of people may get sort of frustrated, they get what they believe is a sort of truncated response that says "yeah we can assist with that, here are the terms for doing that", because in a lot of routine things we are sort of able to just bang out a reply to that fairly quickly. On the non-routine things that we end up not working on, we end up spending more time and resources than we otherwise would if we were working on it just to tell somebody "hey sorry we can't help you".
