US Immigration Protections for Citizens of Myanmar

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing arrangements that are being made with respect to temporary protected status of citizens of Myanmar in the United States. For those who are unaware, the situation in Myanmar, let's say it is rather tense at the moment. Exactly what is going on over there I am not going to get into but long story short there have been a number of major developments in Myanmar that are having a substantial impact on folks both in the country and presumably abroad. In a recent article from npr.org, the article is titled: The US Offers Protected Status for People from Myanmar as Coup Leaders Crackdown. Quoting directly: "the United States will offer temporary protected status to people from Myanmar who fear returning home the Biden Administration said Friday."  Quoting further: "Due to the military coup and security forces' brutal violence against civilians, the people of Burma are suffering a complex and deteriorating humanitarian crisis in many parts of the country, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement, using another name for Myanmar." (when they say Burma it also means Myanmar).  Quoting further and quoting directly from Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, quote: "After a thorough review of this dire situation, I have designated Burma for temporary protected status so that Burmese Nationals and habitual residents may remain temporarily in the United States."

So good news for folks who have a Myanmar passport that are in the United States and wish to remain due to fears about returning to Myanmar. How this will impact other folks I am not sure. In fact, those who aren't in the United States it will have relatively little impact.

Hopefully the situation in Myanmar improves and this situation improves overall. Certainly folks are in my thoughts on all of this but it is nice to see that there has been some, I don't know what the right word is for it but some compassion has been granted to Myanmar citizens who are currently in the United States.
