"Two Countries, One Destination" for Thai and Vietnamese Immigration?
Transcript of the above video:
In what for me was a bit of an unexpected development, it looks like Thailand and Vietnam may be working together toward some sort of shared Immigration program seemingly to boost tourism, it looks like. That said, let's jump in. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from vnexpress.net, that is vnexpress.net, the article is titled: Vietnam proposes 'Two Countries, One Destination' initiative to Thai PM. Quoting directly: "Vietnam's leading hospitality giant Sun Group proposed several strategic pillars of corporation between businesses of the two countries, aiming to further strengthen trade and economic ties between Vietnam and Thailand. On the afternoon of June 9, as part of the Prime Minister of Thailand's official visit to Vietnam marking the 50th anniversary of Vietnam - Thailand diplomatic relations, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul met with several leading Vietnamese tourism giants. During a private meeting with the Thai PM, Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sun Group, introduced its core business sectors, including hospitality, entertainment, real estate, and infrastructure, as well as newly added sectors that help complete its ecosystem such as healthcare, education, aviation, and finance-banking. Building on this foundation, Truong proposed several strategic cooperation pillars with Thailand. One notable proposal was the creation of a 'Two Countries, One Destination' initiative, connecting renowned destinations in both countries such as Phu Quoc, Phuket, and Koh Samui. Quote: "Alongside the new daily Phu Quoc - Bangkok route, Sun PhuQuoc Airways will expand its network from Phu Quoc, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City to Phuket, Chiang Mai, and beyond. At the same time, by leveraging Phu Quoc's Visa free policy, we aim to pair the islands of both countries, enabling travelers from Europe, the CIS countries, and even citizens of Vietnam and Thailand to experience both nations seamlessly as a single destination." So interesting. Interesting proposal. It will be rather interesting to see how this plays out.
Now during the last Government - I made videos on this at the time - they were discussing sort of a Pan-ASEAN Visa, nothing seemed to really come of that. But on a bilateral level I think there is probably more of a chance of seeing something like this actually come to fruition. And I say that because look, I talked about this at the time when they were trying for this Pan-ASEAN Visa. Trying to get a bunch of Heads of national Immigration Services to cooperate in that way I find it unlikely. They all have their own priorities, especially with regard to their own policies, and just coordinating that, I thought was a bit of a reach. Trying to do this between two different countries, I could actually see that working out. And it's going to be interesting to see if this actually does become something where Europeans will sort of fly in and go to like Samui and then one of the Vietnamese islands and then fly back out, or something of that nature.
Again, not a foregone conclusion that it could occur, but we will certainly be keeping folks updated on this channel as this situation evolves.
