Thai Airports Brace For Songkran Rush

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Thai Airports bracing for the major rush having to do with Thai New Year. For those who are unaware, Thailand has its own New Year; it is called Songkran. I liken it somewhat to Mardi Gras a little bit in New Orleans insofar that it is a big party. Now over here, it's a big water fight and there are many foreigners that flee Bangkok, flee the city areas for fear of getting entrapped, enthralled in a big water fight here in Bangkok. I usually have fun during Songkran but a little Songkran goes a long way, so I definitely get that the water fights are a little much for folks.

This leads to a two-prong issue: one, there's a great deal of demand to come into Thailand and there is a spike in demand to depart from Thailand as well, as many Thais as well as foreigners who live in Thailand often take the opportunity of Songkran week to go on trips outside of the Kingdom elsewhere in the region.

I thought of making this video after reading an article in the Phuket News, that's thephuketnews.com, the article is titled: Phuket airport readies for Songkran rush. Quoting directly: "Management of Phuket International Airport have assured that temperatures will not rise throughout the passenger terminals while two of the four main air conditioning units in Phuket's key tourism portal undergo an "overhaul" ahead of the expected surge in passenger traffic over the Songkran holidays."

I am always fascinated at the coincidence of things like air conditioning breaking down right before one of the big spikes in folks coming through a given area. That said, I also have been reading about protocols undertaken at Suvarnabhumi Airport here in Bangkok as well as Don Muang, as well as airports down in Samui and up in Chiang Mai who are yeah, they are bracing as well for a major influence of folks not only coming in; I think one thing that people fail to realize is there are a number of people that leave Thailand at the same time. It puts a great deal of strain on the resources of the Airport sector here in Thailand. That said, Thailand's airport infrastructure is quite sophisticated and I have no doubt that it can deal with the demands that will come from tourists coming in during Songkran week.
