Passport Expiration and Entry Rules for Thailand

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing expiration of passports and entry rules regarding foreign nationals entering the Kingdom of Thailand. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article in the Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com. I urge those who are watching this video, go check out that article in detail as there is a lot of information in there. I am going to quote a small excerpt but it doesn't really get to the thrust of that article, it's more for analysis in this video. Quoting directly, the article is titled: British expats face delays in obtaining replacement passports. Quoting directly: "A spokeswoman for Thai Immigration advised Brits to," (and this could be said for anybody, this isn't particular to Brits). "A spokeswoman for Thai Immigration advised Brits to apply for replacement visas early pointing out that Visas cannot be extended to beyond the passport validity and," (more importantly for this video) "entry to Thailand requires a minimum of six months still remaining before expiry."

So for example, if you have a valid passport but it is only valid for 4 months, you have 120 days of validity left on that passport, you are a foreign national, you are sitting in your home country, you are sitting in Phnom Penh, you are sitting in Malaysia, and you say "hey I want to go to Thailand!" Thailand is not going to let you in with that passport. In fact the airline probably won't even let you board the flight until you get a passport that has more than six months validity on it. So if you are thinking of doing a Border Run for example, be aware of the expiration of your passport; if you are thinking of doing a Visa Run i.e. running outside of the Kingdom, getting a new visa and coming back, beware of the expiration of your passport. It can have ramifications.

As noted in another part of that article that I just quoted from, they note that it could take a matter of weeks to get a new passport, for example if you are a British citizen. The same possibly can be said regarding Americans it can take a little while for a new passport to be issued. This is something to bear in mind if you are doing a lot of Visa Runs and Borders Runs in Southeast Asia and especially for here in Thailand because if your passport has an expiration date of less than 6 months, if you only have that much time left, less than 6 months left on your passport, you are not going to be able to enter Thailand on that passport.
