OK China

Transcript of the above video:

Boy I really struggled with titling this video but I went ahead and went with OK China. One of the other alternatives titles was going to be: It is "mai pen rai" down here China. The original title I wanted to go with but I thought it was a little too sort of inside baseball for lack of a better term on my own thinking. You kind of have to sort of be very aware of the film The Big Lebowski which my original title of this was going to be "China, this is not 'Nam this is Thailand. There are rules!" but I didn't really want to drag Vietnam into it because they didn't have anything to do with this and I think it would be lost on a lot of people but in my head, the minute I read the article we are going to analyze here, I immediately just thought of that line Walter Sobchak, from The Big Lebowski, "Smokey this is not 'Nam, this is bowling. There are rules."

So sort of the point of this video, this is going to kind of be like more of an opinion thing here but I couldn't not make this video after reading this article. So I found this article in the Thai Examiner, thaiexaminer.com, and I urge those who are watching this video, go read that article in detail. As usual they do a really in-depth sort of report, information, the whole bit and we thank them for that; tip of the hat. Again, urging folks go check that out for yourselves. The article is titled: Fear mongering, fake news and disinformation being stoked in China against visiting Thailand. Quoting directly: "Thai Officials through the Royal Thai Embassy in Beijing were forced this week to issue a reassurance to potential Chinese visitors to the country regarding their safety and security following a damaging viral campaign which reached millions of online readers behind China's Great Firewall in which spurious, fearful and outlandish claims were made aimed at putting netizens off visiting the Kingdom as tourists." Quoting further: "Thai Officials in Bangkok and Beijing were scrambling on Thursday and Friday to contain a highly damaging viral campaign on Chinese Social Media actively discouraging people from visiting the Kingdom." (I shouldn't laugh about that, that is serious stuff.) "The sensational and outright false claims targeted potential Chinese holiday makers. They were warned of scams and being extorted by criminal gangs praying on unsuspecting visitors with the widely debunked conspiracy theories of tourists being captured and subjected to organ harvesting being raised to scare off potential travelers to the Kingdom which has emerged as China's favourite holiday destination now that the pandemic has finally ended there."

So yeah, what can I say other than "OK China", sort of in the same vein as one would say "Okay boomer" back in the US; not making this video to sort of denigrate boomers but I just thought that the same kind of line of reasoning that when I talk to somebody, maybe the older generation that says something completely wildly out of touch about like how the internet works for example, that Senator years ago who said “the internet is a series of tubes.” My response is just, "okay boomer, whatever you say!" On this one that kind of "OK China. Yeah, mmmm!"

So now perhaps I might be viewed as someone having come to Thailand as an immigrant who became Thai, perhaps I am a little biased, but I can state unequivocally that at no point in all my days in Thailand have I ever seen a tourist absconded with nor have I ever seen anybody in the aftermath of having had their organs harvested here in Thailand. So let me, if nothing else and I can only speak for myself and from my own observations, but let me just say: "Chinese tourists, of course you are welcome in Thailand, we would love to see you here, just like all the other tourists that come to Thailand, always happy to see tourists come to Thailand. Especially in the aftermath of the last few years where tourism was shall we say a little more moribund than we were usually used to. But I have to say, don't worry on this one. I think you are going to be okay. If you get on a plane and come down here to Thailand, you are going to go back with both kidneys, I will just say that now. I think you are safe, it is safe to say you are going to go back with both kidneys, all your organs. I think that is a safe bet. Don't worry, that issue is sorted, that's sorted out so don't concern yourself with that, just concern yourselves with coming on down here to Thailand and having a good old time while on holiday here in the Kingdom.”
