Controversy Arises at Malaysian Immigration Checkpoint

Transcript of the above video:

Every now and again we will go ahead and do a video about immigration in some of the surrounding jurisdictions to Thailand and in this case we are talking about Malaysia. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the South China Morning Post, that's scmp.com, article is titled: Malaysian Minister breaks silence after being accused of barging into airport to 'free' Chinese woman. Quoting directly: "Malaysia's Tourism, Arts and Cultural  Minister Tiong King Sing claimed he had to personally step in to help an employee of a China-based Media Company after Immigration Officers held her up at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, (KLIA), on her arrival from Shenzhen on Thursday. The woman alleged that although her travel documents were in order, she was denied entry by Immigration Officers. She alleged that she was asked to pay several thousand ringgit if she wanted to be allowed entry."

So yeah apparently something went down here where at Malaysian Immigration there were some Officers that were trying to play some kind of I guess shakedown game with this person. If you read the article and I urge you to do so, again South China Morning Post, scmp.com, you can check that out in detail. But yeah it looked like, I don't know why they did it, it seemed rather odd but yeah it did appear that there was there was a major controversy about this; this woman got quite irate and just sort of refused to go along with it. It kind of mushroomed into I don't know if it went viral or something on social media, but it sort of mushroomed into a bigger controversy and it resulted in an actual Minister from Malaysia having to step in to go ahead and deal with it. Again I don't know exactly what was going on when this all transpired. I urge those go read that article but understand yes Immigration Officers in virtually any jurisdiction have a great deal of discretion but they are not allowed to engage in illegal activity, shake people down for nothing. It did not appear from what I read that this person was like inadmissible or anything to Malaysia, it just appeared that the Immigration Officers in Malaysia had sort of unilaterally decided to give this person a hard time.

Interesting situation. It goes to show that every Immigration system has its fair share of problems it's not just certain jurisdictions and again we will keep you updated on this channel regarding regional immigration matters as the situation evolves.
