CR-1 Visas from Thailand: Changes to the I-864 Form

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the CR-1 Visa. This is a Conditional Permanent Resident Visa. This is for those who are married to a US citizen or lawful permanent resident, for less than two years at the time they enter the United States. Generally speaking, they are going to end up with a CR-1 Visa if they have been married less than two years to their American counterpart.

A recent development, we have done videos on this, they have changed the parameters of the Public Charge Rule and concomitant with that they have rescinded, I call them the "old forms" but frankly Trump invented them. They didn't last very long and now they have been rescinded; they are now going back to, it looks to me like, an iteration of the prior form and it is definitely not as difficult to deal with as the Trump version of the I-864.

Long story short, the form is changing. They phased this in; I think over the next 6 weeks and then eventually they won't accept the old form at all. So long story short if you can and you are dealing with this, it is probably a good idea to start using the new form sooner rather than later. If you have already submitted your stuff, don't worry greatly about it; it is just a matter of bureaucratic processing.

I think this is overall good news. The Public Charge Rule as it sat under the last Administration was really quite an obstacle for folks who were legitimately trying to travel into the United States as an Immigrant. Again, I hope that this results in things being a bit more streamlined for folks trying to get a CR-1 Visa in the future.
