Why Are Thai Business Visas Different From "Work" Visas?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Business Visas and why they are not the same thing as "work visas". Well let's go ahead and dispel a misnomer right now. There is not, well there was not until a couple of years ago, anything akin to a "work visa" in Thailand. I have lived in Korea I know what it is like up there, I know what it is like in other countries.

Thailand is kind of an anomaly in this way, oftentimes work authorization is connected into the Visa itself so it is part and parcel of that. Thailand doesn't operate on that system. Work authorization is separate and apart oftentimes from particularly a standard Business Visa. You have to deal with the Business Visa and then you deal with the work authorization separate apart from that. Now there are certain visas, for example the so-called Smart Visa, now supposedly we are seeing this LTR Visa rolled out where they are saying that it is going to have inherent work authorization much like the Smart Visa. Again, it remains to be seen and I haven't seen exactly where the authority is to do that although it might be being done regulatorily so it kind of remains to be seen on that.

The long story short, yeah it is rather interesting that in Thailand there is a difference between a Business Visa which you would think would just be work authorized, "I can go there and do business". No, in point in fact it is not specifically work authorized; it is not the same as a work visa. You have to get a Work Permit if you wish to work in Thailand under a Business Visa in the vast majority of cases.
