When Did China Start Dictating Thai Tourism Policy?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing, well we are asking the question, "since when did China start dictating any kind of Policy, tourism or otherwise, here in Thailand?" I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Tourism firms shun gambling risk. Quoting directly: "Tourism operators are warning the Chinese market could significantly decline if Thailand legalizes casinos and online gambling, after the issue was raised during the censure debate against Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Monday. The opposition People's Party argued that legalizing casinos was never included in the Phua Thai Party's campaign pledges." Well she rescinded, even dealing with reviewing the possibility of promulgating this as legislation, so I don't really know why they are coming up against her on it, because she already pulled that back. But that said, quoting further: "The policy puts Thai Tourism Sector at risk if China discourages its citizens from visiting Thailand as a result of legalized gambling, noted the opposition. MP Parit Wacharasindhu said the Government continues to eagerly push this project, though it acknowledged Beijing has consistently curbed the number of outbound Chinese tourists seeking gambling overseas. This move already affected destinations that have legal, casinos such as Singapore, the Philippines and Macau."
Well first of all, doesn't that kind of argue against legalized gambling to begin with period? I mean we were told it was so great because of Singapore, Philippines and Macau, and then now it's like well maybe not. That said, back to this though. Quoting directly: "The policy puts the Thai Tourism Sector at risk if China discourages its citizens from visiting Thailand as a result of legalized gambling."
You know what? I am sick and tired of China like obliquely dictating to Thailand policy and laws. Thailand can determine her own laws. If China wants to send people down here, if Chinese citizens want to be tourists to Thailand, that's their own business. If you don't like Thailand don't come. But I am sick of this from China, constant, "oh well if you do that, we won't send tourists." Then don't send them. Stop extorting Thailand with your precious tourists, which by the way they plague us here like locusts when they come through. Have you ever seen the footage of these people going to a buffet? I mean honestly. Are you really trying to use these people to extort the Thais? Get a grip on yourself China. If Thailand decides to legalize gambling or not, that is Thailand's sovereign prerogative. It's none of your business, the national policies that get set here. And I am sick and tired of the Chinese - particularly it seems the mainlanders - trying to extort Thailand with their own tourists. If you don't like Thai policy, if you don't like what Thailand is doing, just don't come.
