What Documentation Is Required To Open A Thai Bank Account?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are asking what documentation is required to open a Thai Bank Account. I have gotten a lot of correspondence over roughly the past year especially since we saw Thailand reopened in earnest here in 2023 and a lot of folks have been pouring into Thailand and they have been looking to set up banking facilities and there is a lot of frustration associated with this. Many people have contacted me and said look I have gone into one branch multiple times. Every time I go in they tell me different things or one day I will have a list of documents I need, I will go get them, I will come back and then they will say I need something else.
Long story short and I don’t wish to sound like a broken record, here but different banks have different rules with regard to their protocols for setting up a new bank account. Now some banks are very, very strict and require things like a Work Permit in order to even get a bank account. Other banks are a little more lenient but even then I have been hearing a lot of things especially those who are on Tourist Visas here in Thailand or Thai Visa exemption stamps, folks who are having a heck of a time getting set up with a Thai Bank Account or Thai banking facilities; again it is going to depend from bank to bank. One thing I can say is yes indeed those who are here temporarily are going to find themselves having a bit of a hard time getting a bank account set up. I have even actually talked to folks who have Work Permits and Long-Term Visa status and they have said they have gone to Banks and had a heck of a time trying to get things sorted.
Now as discussed in other videos, we do provide services for folks looking to set up a bank account here in Thailand. So if you are looking to set up a bank account, it may not be a terrible idea to contact us and we may be able to assist in getting you a bank account depending on your circumstances. That said, yeah, from bank to bank it is going to differ and even within the same bank, different branches are going to kind of have slightly different protocols. So it is one of those things that if you are a foreigner here, it can cause a great deal of consternation and again it may not be a terrible idea to contact a legal professional, gain some insight and guidance into how best to proceed.
