Is There A Good Reason For Thai Immigrations 90 Day Reporting?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing 90-day reporting. Those here in Thailand especially expats on Visa Extensions, this is kind of a topic that's one that often is greeted with a great deal of less than positive response is usually how I find it.
I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Is there an alternative to Thailand's 90 days reporting? Quoting directly: "There are several reasons why most expats in Thailand have to report their presence and address every 3 months. The usual justification is to keep an eye on any wayward Farang or to prevent tourists from staying more than 3 months including an extension, without leaving the country. But Immigration Officers say the 90 days report has other uses for example assisting Embassies to locate an individual in Thailand whose relative has just died in the Home country." Yeah, that is a fair one I would say.
I have said this before and I will say it again. I think 90-day reporting is too frequent; I think it makes a lot more sense to perhaps have reporting once every six months obviously when you go in and deal with your own extension, and then another six months down the road just to ascertain where one is. Again I think a digital app could be created which would be much less cumbersome than the current protocols even online currently are, but leaving that aside that would be my personal opinion. As it is we still have to deal with 90-day reporting, but it is a good point. Folks forget that Embassies and Consulates dealing with their foreign nationals here in Thailand, oftentimes will have people pass away here. And again there are a lot of foreign nationals in Thailand and it is relatively straightforward to just begin staying somewhere without a great deal of oversight. I am not saying that such a bad thing but the 90-day reporting system, again I don't think there is a lot of justification for it based on the modern world we live in, especially the ability to do some sort of app which makes it very easy to ascertain where someone's address is at any given moment.
But that said, I would say there is something to the argument that 90-day reporting does in fact have a purpose especially in light of Consular Services, Embassy Services provided by foreign Embassies in Thailand to their own nationals here and especially where someone passes away and they have a loved one back in their home country who is trying to figure out where they are or where they were living.
