Thailand's "Tourism Tax" Now Put on Ice?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the "Tourism Tax". This is also kind of sometimes discussed and sometimes seems to get conflated with insurance, inbound insurance to come into Thailand. What we are specifically talking about, they were proposing a tax, an extra fee on tourists coming in. It was going to be put in this sort of fund that was going to go toward basically providing sort of a hospital fund for foreigners who got ill or got injured here in Thailand. It hasn't been the most popular topic especially among the expats and prospective tourists especially what I call long-term tourists.

Long story short, the reason I thought of making the video was from a recent article in the Pattaya Mail, pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Prior holiday visas to visit Thailand are becoming redundant. A lot of information in here, I am going to quote a little excerpt. I urge those who are watching this video go check out that article directly. Quoting directly: "Yuthasak Supasorn, the TAT Governor," (that is the Tourism Authority of Thailand), quoting further: "this week also announced that the 300 Baht Tourist Fee to be levied on foreigners would not now be implemented for 'one or two years' as the imperative is get tourist numbers up from the doldrums."

Yeah, I definitely think that is an imperative. We definitely want to see tourists here in Thailand more than we really need to impose this kind of fee. I definitely hope this is put on ice. Quite frankly I hope it's put on ice for quite a long time. The Tourism Sector as we have noted in other videos, as I have specifically noted in other videos, truly it has been decimated and we need to get it back. The numbers are starting to come back; we are starting to see folks coming in and that is a very, very good thing and it's something I think we should do everything in our power to avoid causing any obstacles to that. So yeah definitely a good idea to see this Tourism Tax again being sort of mothballed. This isn't to say it might not come back up later. We'll certainly keep you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
