Thailand Should Attract More LGBTQ Retirees?
Transcript of the above video:
The title of this video suggests that we are talking about retirement in Thailand specifically for the LGBTQ+ community. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article in the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Calls for LGBTQ retirement hub. Quoting directly: "Thailand has the potential to boost the pink economy by attracting International LGBTQ+ seniors who are looking for a place to retire. However, to be an LGBTQ retirement destination, more healthcare specialists will be needed, along with more HIV and STD clinics."
Well I urge those who are watching this video, go check out that article in detail, there's a lot of insight in there. Long story short, I don't think that that's really necessary per se. There are plenty of clinics in Thailand that can cater to the health needs of basically anybody. More to the point though is the issue of should Thailand be courting more LGBTQ retirees and I think there's something to be said for that because Thailand is a very open jurisdiction especially with regard to the LGBTQ community, and moreover, well I should say, notwithstanding the lack of legislation in Thailand for same-sex marriage which I don't know of any other jurisdiction in Asia maybe save Taiwan and even that is pretty nebulous up there regarding same-sex marriage, there really isn't a jurisdiction in Asia that allows it as of now to the best of my knowledge. Now Thailand has been talking about it a great deal. I have high hopes for the forthcoming Parliament that we will actually see some legislation regarding same-sex marriage here in Thailand so that may be forthcoming.
That said, purely on the basis of attracting retirees, I think Thailand should be attracting retirees of all stripes from everywhere around the world. If folks have the resources to retire in Thailand hopefully they will come here and do that and will benefit the economy thereby.
So again, while I think it is a good idea to attract the LGBTQ community to Thailand for retirement purposes, it is probably a good idea to attract as many retirees as we can get in Thailand, again provided they can meet the financial requirements in order to maintain long-term Visa status here in the Kingdom.
