Thai Permanent Residence: Nationality Quota Information
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Thai Permanent Residence, specifically were discussing nationality quotas. So there was an article some time ago where they actually approved the sort of enabling Act if you will that allows for Permanent Resident's applications to be accepted by the Thai Immigration Authorities as of October 17 of 2022 so that is when the so-called window will open for PR application. A lot of folks I think that was in the Bangkok Post or something, I can’t remember where it was but it was a little bit sort of fuzzy as to the quota numbers, what the quotas were so I wanted to go ahead and read from the notification. So:
Notification of Immigration Bureau Admission of application for residential permit in the year 2565 (2022) this can be found at immigration.go.th.
Quoting directly: According to the notification from Minister of Interior by approval of the Cabinet issued on August 10 BE 2565 (2022) regarding quota of aliens to have residence in the Kingdom for the year 2022 the following stipulations are applied.
1. 100 persons of each nationality, Colony or colonies of each country shall be considered as one country while each Sovereign state shall be considered as one country and 50 persons for stateless people.
2. The application can be submitted on the date 17, October, 2022 - 29 December, 2022 during office hours.
So the point being here, there is a quota as to there is a cap if you will, how many PR applications can be filed within a given year and it is done by nationality generally. If you come from a colony of a country, you are going to be considered under sort of the mother country's quota for that purpose so like back when the British had Hong Kong, Hong Kongers were treated as British for purposes of filing for PR in Thailand.
The thing to take away from this video is there's 100 per nationality so it is not like there is just a hundred total and I think that confused people in some prior publications that there were only 100 total quota, slots and that is just not the case, it is 100 per nationality. So that is something to bear in mind, and yeah they do cap it out and there are some nationalities that do hit the cap every year and that can be an issue when processing these types of cases. The thing to take away from this video is the PR window is getting ready to open; there is a 100 person quota per nationality for being able to file for PR. As we have noted in other videos, if you are waiting till now at this point in the year to get your act together and get all your documentation together to file for PR, that is probably not the way to go. If you are looking at this now you may want to seriously consider dealing with this about halfway through the forthcoming year. Usually we like to start dealing with these cases at least 90 days out from the likely window opening, so 90 days out from usually October. But again, it may be possible to get on file, it is kind of cutting it close but long story short something to think of is you need to be working on this earlier rather than later.
