Thai House Books, Tax ID Numbers, and Driving Licenses
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing house books, tax ID numbers and driving licenses. I thought of making this video after reading a recent comment on our channel. "I never got an ID card but found that my 13 digit tax ID number helps when an ID number is required, like on forms. A driver's license remains one of the best ID cards based on my experience. How about you?"
I have discussed this in prior videos. Before I became Thai, I had a driving license even though I have never driven in Thailand; I had it primarily to act as an ID card. This was kind of in the days before the pink ID card was overly ubiquitous. These days it may be possible to get a pink ID card. Between a pink ID card and a driving license, I would probably pick a driving license because at least it confers the ability to drive. There's also an underlying implication of whether or not you can leave provinces using a pink card without informing the local Amphur Office and getting into that is kind of a deep dive; I may make a video on that specifically one of these days.
For now suffice it to say yeah pink cards are kind of strange. They were designed more or less for stateless folks here in Thailand especially along the Burmese border and up in the hill country area where there is the hill tribes and things. They were designed as kind of an in between measure between full nationality because their lineage had to be sort of sussed out and just having no ID at all. So they have some implications in that context that may apply to others; I am not going to get into that too deeply. Yes, a tax ID number, for those who work in Thailand yeah, you are going to end up with a tax ID number. There may be certain instances where government offices may want to see that or by using it, it may facilitate quicker processing of some Government document. That being said, as far as just a 'walking around ID' I have always found that a Thai driving license, short of an actual Thai ID card, a Thai driving license is pretty useful.
