Should Thai Immigration Scrap 90 Day Reporting?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing 90-day reporting; probably the least favourite topic on the lips of any expat in Thailand is 90-day reporting. I am very sure that this is the cause of a great deal of consternation amongst foreign nationals here in Thailand. For those who are unaware, those in Thailand on a Non-Immigrant Visa need to update their address even if their address has not changed with Thai Immigration on a quarterly basis, every 90 days.

I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Plea to exempt some foreigners from 90 days report. Quoting directly: "The Employers Federation of Thailand has requested the incoming Thai Government to scrap the 90 days report for guest workers from neighbouring countries (Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam). President Ekasit Kunanantakul said there was too much bureaucracy in the current registration system which required many economic migrants to deal with registration centres, the Immigration Bureau and the Ministries of Labour and of Health. These restrictions were leading to delays which meant that new migrants sometimes had to wait for months before legally being entitled to enter the Thai labour market." Yeah that specifically speaks to migrant workers here in Thailand.

That said and something else to bear in mind is look pretty much every foreigner in Thailand on a Non-Immigrant Visa, most notably keep in mind Permanent Residents do not have to do 90 day reporting but that is a topic for another video. That being said, yeah everybody in Thailand on a Non-Immigrant Visa has to deal with 90-day reporting per the law, the Immigration Act of 1979. Again I think there is something to be said for seriously reconsidering 90-day reporting. As discussed in other videos it looks as though there may be a push in the upcoming government to make some comprehensive Immigration reform and another look at 90-day reporting would probably be a good idea. Now what exactly does some change look like? Well you could go to a system where the address issue is only dealt with on a yearly basis when visas are renewed or you could maybe do it bi-annually; every 6 months you have got to do a report. Either one would be an improvement over the present system for many and I think the 90-day reporting actually throws a lot of folks off. I think when folks look at moving to Thailand for example to retire, they look at 90-day reporting especially if they have never been to Thailand, and they say to themselves, "oh I don't want to deal with that, that doesn't sound so great."

As we have noted in other videos, 90-day reporting is not the most difficult thing to deal with in the world. Oftentimes it just is a matter of showing up, filling out a form and moving on with your life. But that said, again it is something that is kind of the cause of annoyance and frustration on a pretty regular basis for those living in Thailand. So should Thailand get rid of it? My opinion is it should at least be reformed. Now whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen.
