"Hurried" Thai Work Permit Changes?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Work Permits in Thailand. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Thailand agrees work permit easing to address labour shortages. Quoting directly: "The labour authorities have amended the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Myanmar and Cambodian Government's to reduce the shortage of workers in various Thai industries. The economic migrants, mostly on two or four year contracts, are found principally in the tourist trade as hotel staff, labourers on building sites or highways, the fishing industry manning trawlers and factory food processing." Quoting further: "The transitional Government of General Prayut Chan-o-cha made a hurried Cabinet decision to extend the expired permits to July 31 2023, with the proviso that the new incoming Administration would have to sort out the issues."
So yeah, what's going on here? Specifically we are talking about migrant workers having to do with Myanmar and Cambodia. They have a specific Memorandum of Understanding regarding the migrant labour that comes into Thailand to work and they have done sort of a hurried if you will, extension of those folks' work authorization status to take them through the end of July because presently they have got to work out new arrangements associated with those type of workers. Let me be clear, this doesn't have very much to do with most of the viewers that are going to be watching this channel as Farang, Caucasian foreigners if you want to call it that or Western foreigners, the Anglo-sphere, Europe is not really going to be affected by this.
Now that said, in any new regulatory changes that may impact Work Permits, we may actually see those regulatory changes having an impact on work permits overall. We saw this before back in 2018 when they redrafted regulations, primarily to deal with migrant workers but it had ramifications for Work Permit holders throughout the country regardless of nationality. So we will certainly be keeping you updated on this channel as that situation evolves.
