How Much Are Fines For Overstaying In Thailand?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are asking and proposing the question 'what is the fine for overstay in Thailand?' Now let me be clear, we are not talking about the Blacklist here, we are only talking about the fine, okay? So how much does it cost if you are found to be in overstay here in Thailand? So you let your Visa lapse and now you find yourself in overstay, what's the fine?
I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Phuket News, that is thephuketnews.com, the article is titled: Ukrainian man arrested at Phuket airport, charged for 114 days of overstay. Immigration Officers at Phuket International Airport have reported the arrest of a 23-year-old Ukrainian national for overstaying his Visa. The man now faces a 5-year ban on entering the Kingdom." More to the point and again I urge those who are watching this video, go check out that article in detail, quoting further: "According to Immigration Bureau regulations, the fine for overstaying is 500 Baht per day." yeah and it caps out at 20,000. So the fine it's not huge in the sense that I remember pre-blacklist, a lot of people would just think it was, think they were being smart or pulling a fast one whatever, they would just go into like a really long overstay and they just figured out when I leave I will just pay 20,000 Baht to leave; that will be that. And a lot of folks did that.
Then they brought in the new rules, we got the "good guys in bad guys out" program with Thai Immigration and now we have the Immigration System you see now. We have also seen technology increase where they use biometrics and things and we are also seeing Thai Immigration, as you can see in this article, for those who are interested in reading it, Thai Immigration is taking a much more proactive approach with regarding to Immigration Law enforcement and we are actually seeing people being apprehended at the airport which in times past was kind of unheard of at least from my research, in a purely Immigration context. Yes people would get arrested at the airport but it was generally for something else. What we are now seeing is no they are actually enforcing the overstay restrictions and that is having an impact on people being arrested; they are being arrested at the airport. This wasn't happening in the past.
That said, yeah as far as the fine goes, you are looking at 500 Baht per day, again caps out at 20,000 Baht but bear in mind, if you are even found to be in overstay by even one day as noted in this article, you can be banned from Thailand for five years if you are apprehended within the Kingdom.
