A Digital Platform to Register Foreign Tourists in Thailand?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests we are discussing a registration system to register foreign tourists in Thailand.

A recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: PM Mulls Quarantine "Bypass" and I thought that this tiny little sentence was very interesting. Quoting directly: "General Prayut said a digital platform needs to be created to register the tourists."  This was in the context of the discussion of a quarantine free Phuket in July where Phuket may be allowing folks who have already received vaccination to travel into Phuket and that those folks would need to be tracked somehow. I am going to read this line again. Quoting directly from bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: PM Mulls Quarantine "Bypass". Quoting directly: "General Prayut said a digital platform needs to be created to register the tourists." So exactly what that looks like remains to be seen. We have discussed the Thailand Plus app before; we have discussed certain aspects of the new digital system under which folks process their applications through Thai Embassies and Consulates abroad. A lot of this process has become heavily digitized and now it appears they may be creating a system to track foreign tourists once they are here.

Again, the practicalities of this and the logistics remain to be seen. We will certainly keep you updated on this channel as the situation progresses and hopefully we will have less to report on this. I don't really like to get my own views involved but people have been asking me, they sort of say "why do you know talk about things like the notion of tracking devices, contact tracing and some of this stuff that comes up in Thailand that does seem a little bit off the wall?" One of the reasons I discuss it is because one it is pertinent for travelers who are coming here. I am not trying to be a downer about things but it is my hope that some of the more outlandish notions, if they are discussed a little bit more, if people kind of say "yeah maybe we are not going to go ahead and do that." How exactly you would run a tracking system for all the foreign tourists coming into Thailand just as a practical matter, I just don't know that that is going to be overly feasible. That said, there is a lot of computing power out there these days and so bringing something like that online although it remains to be seen, it could happen in the future and we will certainly keep you updated on this channel if it does.
