All Foreigners Need Insurance to Extend Their Thai Visa?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are posing the question "do all foreigners need insurance to extend their Thai Visa here in Thailand?" The answer to that question is "NO", the short answer is no but again there are nuances on this.
I got to thinking about making this video after reading a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Six frequently asked Thai Immigration questions in May 2022. Quoting directly:
"Do foreigners need insurance to extend their stay at Thai Immigration?" Quoting further: “Those with most visas or permission to enter do not require Insurance to extend their stay. The exceptions are the STV (that is the special Tourist Visa), the O-X (that is the so-called 10 year Retirement Visa, O-X Visa) and the O-A (that is the O annual Retirement Visa, the O-A retirement Visa to be clear): specifics vary at Immigration Offices. The three month O Visa based on retirement, given by Embassies, runs out after 3 months. However, it can be extended at Immigration for a further 12 months without any insurance but with specific bank deposits or income stipulations.”
Also bear in mind, can't make real general statements about any of that because again it varies office to office so even the O, I have seen circumstances where they have been a little bit leery about extending an O that was issued abroad and they do start asking questions about insurance. Ultimately, in that one case we didn't have an issue with it but again different Immigration Offices do things differently. Different Immigration Officers within the same office oftentimes will do things differently so when you are reading stuff that makes a generalization about any Visa category take it with a little bit of a grain of salt. Definitely a good rule of thumb maybe to go by but it not necessarily is the definitive answer in your specific case.
Long story short, NO, not all Visa holders here in Thailand, foreign nationals specifically, need to maintain insurance to maintain their status. That said, there are a number of categories which may be used by a number of people that do require maintenance of said insurance in order to continue in status here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
