45 Day Thai Visa Exemption "Only Temporary"?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the recently announced 45-day Thai Visa Exemption Stamp. The question arises, "Is this permanent?" I have had people asking me that and interestingly enough I was reading in an article from Thai PBS World, that is thaipbsworld.com, the article is titled: Thai Cabinet approves 45-day stay for tourists entitled to Visa exemption and 30 days with Visa on Arrival. Quoting directly: "The Cabinet approved an edict of the Interior Ministry today (Tuesday) extending the period of stay, from 30 to 45 days, for tourists from countries and territories entitled to Visa exemptions and from 15 to 30 days for those eligible for a Visa on Arrival." (And this is key) "The extension is however only temporary from October 1st until the end of March next year to coincide with the traditionally tourism high season in Thailand, when more tourists, especially from Europe and the US, are expected to escape the cold weather and head to Thailand."
So yeah, at least for the present time presume this is temporary and I think that this is a good rule of thumb; presume this is not going to be around next summer or around Songkran year in 2023. Now they may extend it, who knows. I have seen them do that before and I have also seen them let it lapse, it can go either way. Do not presume anything until it is officially announced but for now, yeah throughout this upcoming High season here in the Kingdom of Thailand we are definitely looking at a 45-day Thai visa Exemption.
For those who are unaware of what an Exemption is, for those who come from countries that are allowed to use it, it basically just says “hey look get on a plane, use your passport; you don't need to get a visa from an Embassy or Consulate before coming here or go online and deal with it. Just get in the plane, come here, you will be stamped in for 45 days, that is it”. It is not a Visa in the traditional sense it is an exemption from a Visa that does confer lawful status here in Thailand. So it is a Visa exemption stamp that confers 45 days of legal status here in the Kingdom of Thailand and at least for the time being, this will be allowed between October 2022 and March 2023.
