Thailand's Expat Community Taking Issue with Foreigners Behaving Badly?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, it seems even certain aspects of the Expat Community are taking issue with events - I've done videos called 'Foreigners Behaving Badly' - foreigners coming to Thailand engaging in all sorts of behaviour that is inappropriate. Now even the expat Community is starting to have some issues with this. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Pattaya in the eyes of foreign residents as living costs continue to rise. Quoting directly: "At the same time, local residents and business operators have expressed concerns regarding the behaviour of a minority of foreign visitors who violate laws or create disturbances in public areas. Such incidents often generate significant attention on social media and in the local news reports, prompting calls for stricter enforcement and improved visitor management. Despite these challenges, Pattaya continues to attract millions of domestic and international tourists every year. Its beaches, entertainment venues, sporting events, festivals and growing infrastructure investments ensure that the city remains one of Thailand's most recognizable tourism destinations. Many observers believe the key challenge for Pattaya's future will not simply be increasing tourist numbers, but achieving a balance between economic growth, visitor quality, public safety, environmental sustainability and the quality of life enjoyed by local residents."
Yeah, it's interesting. We are going through a really interesting phase I think in Thailand's sort of tourism sector and in its sort of expat sector as events around the world are shaping the economies and also the budgets of various types of travellers. One thing obviously we have seen an uptick in is nomads, so-called, and how they are having an impact on sort of the expat community or the environment if you will here in Thailand, it remains to be seen. For the most part it seems to be rather positive, but there are downsides and then on top of it, it seems like we have just gotten an influx of a lot of people who don't know how to act I guess or they all come here and seem to want to lose their mind and do all kinds of things that one would think one wouldn't do back in their home countries. But more and more, I personally think, look law enforcement here is not unaware of this stuff. As we have discussed in other videos, the Police are taking these nominee problems increasingly seriously; they view it as a national security issue, especially light of the fact two weapons stockpiles maintained by foreigners have been found here in Thailand; that definitely I think gets many Thai hackles up. And then on top of it, we are seeing these viral videos and things of foreign nationals doing all kinds of stuff that again is really considered inappropriate, really in any society, but again, the Thais view these things very, very seriously. They don't like to see people come to their country and basically for lack of a better term, make it worse, and even the expat Community is picking up on this.
So again, what's the conclusion to be drawn? Well my conclusion to draw from this is that I think we will increasingly see more assiduous and proactive Law Enforcement as it pertains to foreigners and I also expect that we will also probably see - unless we see a slowdown in high season - we are probably not going to see this abate anytime soon. Again, how that plays out remains to be seen, so we will certainly be keeping folks updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
