Real Estate Measurements in Thailand: What is a Rai of Land?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Thai real estate measurements. We are specifically discussing the “Rai”.

As Expats will tell you and folks who have been around Thailand with any frequency, you will often hear folks say "Oh I bought a "Rai" of land to build a house on",  or "we got a few "Rai" of land up country my wife and I".  You will just sort of hear the word "Rai" sort of thrown about and I at least eventually said to myself what is a "Rai" and so I went and looked it up and I figured perhaps folks who are watching my videos, watching this channel, might be interested to know what a Rai is. A Rai is a unit area equal to 1,600 square meters or 0.16 hectares or 0.3954 acres. To me, I am an American so we are still using acres which I am pretty sure nobody is using acres, but it is 0.395 acres so it is like a third of an acre. In my head that is kind of how I rectify it.

Its current size is precisely derived from the meter it should be noted so it is metric but is not really encouraged by the International System or the SI, the metric system. Rai is defined as one square sen or 40 m by 40 m and it can be divided into 4 ngaan or 400 square wa; we will make some other videos contemporaneously with this one where we describe the wa or the ngaan.

The thing to take away from this video is it is metric in its own way. It is sort of the Thai twist on the metric system but as noted it is 0.16 hectares or little more than a third of an acre.
