A "Marriage Equality" Law In Thailand?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video is just, we are discussing the possibility of marriage equality in Thailand, sometimes referred to as same-sex marriage. We have discussed this topic at length in many other videos especially in the context of the United States. Some years ago, I was a real proponent of same-sex marriage in the United States especially in an Immigration context.

That said, it seems that the new Government in Thailand may have some ideas of their own regarding a Marriage Equality Law here in the Kingdom. Quoting directly from a recent article in the Bangkok Post, that is bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Srettha backs gender equality, sex worker bills. Quoting directly: "Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has pledged to push for the passage of three bills, including a draft law on "marriage equality", says a government spokesman." Quoting further: "The Marriage Equality Bill aims to amend the Civil and Commercial Code to allow anyone of a suitable age to register their marriage regardless of their gender. The current code only recognizes marriage between a man and a woman."

As we discussed in other videos, quite a while ago at one time here in Thailand the main discussion revolved around whether or not there should be sort of a Civil Union kind of set up or have full marriage equality. Now the debate had raged in the past over say "Okay, we will give you all the legal rights but we are not going to call it marriage AKA what was once described as Civil Union in the US context. There are some that feel that that is kind of disingenuous; they don't really like the notion of Civil Union versus Marriage. At the end of the day, it actually remains to be seen how this would play out in terms of Thai Immigration, whether it would necessarily confer a Visa benefit to those who are married, same-sex couples married to each other, one spouse being Thai. Again it remains to be seen.

Long story short, it does look like that marriage equality is a priority of the present Government of Thailand; it looks like they are making efforts to promulgate legislation to change the present laws. We will certainly keep you updated on this channel as that situation evolves.
