A High Speed Railway In Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor. For those who are unaware, we have made videos on this in the past. This is a special zone - it's an economic zone - in the Eastern, sort of southeastern part of Thailand. It consists of the provinces of Chonburi, Chachoengsao and Rayong as well as within that area is also the incorporated Municipality of Pattaya. So again, there is a lot already going on down there; there's the port area in the form of Laem Chabang which is down in that area. So again there's an awful lot going on down in the Eastern Economic Corridor in terms of economic activity.

That said, I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: EEC targets high-speed rail plan. Quoting directly: "The Eastern Economic Corridor, (EEC) Office is close to finalizing a commercial development plan for areas in Chonburi and Chasoengsao, part of a proposed high-speed rail system that will link Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi train and U-tapao airports. The project concerns stations for the high-speed train system, one in Pattaya City and the other in Chachoengsao."

So again we have kind of being staying on top of this. The infrastructural programs that were undertaken some years back that continue at pace here in Thailand, are going to have substantial ramifications in terms of the overall economy here. And when we do see this high-speed rail system come online, I suspect overnight, not unlike what we've seen with the rail system here in Bangkok where it has completely transformed the city; I mean just from an expat perspective here in Bangkok, Bangkok is a totally different City to the one I moved to which was basically yes it was a sprawling urban area, but it was very much akin to every little District was kind of its own little village and they were all kind of sitting next to one another whereas now the rail system has sort of knitted all of that together if you will.

I suspect we will see similar phenomenon when we see the rail system in the Eastern Economic Corridor come online because we will likely see the overall economy just probably start to boom; we will start to see all kinds of unrealized economic activity come about as a result of that new infrastructure. When I look at the Eastern Economic Corridor generally, the only direction I see it going in terms of socially and economically, is up.
