Gold, Thai Gold, and the US Dollar

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing gold, Thai gold and the US Dollar. I will jump right in, I got to thinking of this after reading article on the Bangkok Post bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Spot Gold declines to lowest in over 2 years. Now let's be clear, I believe when they are talking about Spot gold here they are talking International Gold standard gold which we will get into momentarily. It's different from Thai gold which we discussed. Quoting further: "The spot gold price dropped to its lowest level in more than 2 years, pressured by a strong US Dollar and the rise of US Government bond yields amid concerns about prolonged tightening monetary policy and the likelihood of recession. Bullion has been hovering around US$1,700 an ounce for most of September but plummeted as low as $1,660 and 50 cents on Thursday and traded around $1,654.55 late Friday according to Hua Seng Heng Futures. A gauge of the Dollar's strength rose 0.2% and remains close to a record high." Again this is a small excerpt, I urge those who are watching this go to the Bangkok Post and check that out for yourself.

Now the point to be brought up here is when I first read this article when I was first looking at it I was like “oh Thai Gold is down”, and then I went and looked and I mean it's down a little; it was up over 30,000 a Baht and as we have discussed, Baht weight gold, Thailand has its own weight and measure of gold 96.5 purity, percent pure gold, basically 23 and a half carats roughly, the weight and measure of it is different from International standard gold. When I first heard that, I kind of disregarded Thai Gold because I thought well, "you can't deal with it on the international market, what is the point?" kind of thing. How naïve I was. It definitely insulates the Thai gold price a lot from the vicissitudes of the International Gold market which fluctuates in my opinion especially more downward seemingly against otherwise clearly overwhelming trends in Gold's favour. Leaving that aside, yeah presently the dollar is strong so gold against the dollar is weakening a little bit. As we have discussed in other videos, there is a fungibility mechanism between International gold and the dollar as well as Thai gold but it doesn't seem to be having a massive negative impact on the Thai gold price, I think the Thai gold price is sitting just under 30 right now but that is still really high. I mean I remember being here years ago and it was way lower than that like 12- 14,000 Baht for a Baht, for one Baht worth of gold whereas now it is more than double that.

So again, it depends on where you look and what you are looking at but it would seem for the moment, International Gold is a little bit weak against the dollar but Thai Gold is just kind of doing its own thing.
