Fake "Doctor" Arrested in Thailand?
Transcript of the above video:
Yet another one of these "foreigners behaving badly" videos. I thought of making this one after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Fake Russian Doctor arrested in Phuket. Quoting directly: "A Russian woman who claimed to be a doctor and offered medical treatments without a license has been arrested on this Southern tourist island." - and Southern tourist Island means Phuket - Quoting further: "The operation followed reports of a foreign woman advertising medical services online and arranging appointments with foreign clients seeking treatment. Investigators contacted the suspect via WhatsApp messaging service through a suspect's friend, identified only as Marina, who also claimed to be a doctor. They arranged an appointment where an injection was offered to cure symptoms associated with alcohol consumption. Two undercover agents met Ms. (I'm going to redact names here) at a rental residence in Muang district at 9pm."
Real quickly here, while we go from the citation back to me doing my analysis here. Quick shameless plug, as I have discussed in other videos, Pancake Palace is now open on Soi Anuman Rachadhon, also called Narathiwas Soi 1, also sometimes referred to as Soi Tarntawan. I will put a location, Google location link, in the description below but putting up some photos of our food here. Yeah Pancake Palace, we are now open. This is kind of an American diner experience. Pancakes, we have got great buffalo wings, chilli if you like chilli, we have got great chilli, so again come on by if you want to enjoy some good old American diner food.
“(Name redacted) later admitted she was a fake doctor and was not licensed to sell medical drugs. She had administered similar treatments several times on the island, police said." Yes, this is kind of one of those where people come here and they do things that it's like would you ever go to any other country or in your home country, pretend to be a doctor? I mean seems pretty to the point of almost insane, absurdly insane, but yeah would you do that? To my mind, I mean the immediate answer is NO.
That said, as we have discussed in other videos and this is actually one of the things that continues, it is why I am so serious about the foreigners who come here and pretend to be lawyers or talk about Thai legal issues, Thai Accounting, Thai Tax, or now medicine, professions outside of their bailiwick and improperly and frankly illegally as we have discussed in other videos is because it can cause genuine damage to the public. I mean really, a fake doctor can have all kinds of negative ramifications on a person - physically, mentally - all kinds of things. Now you could argue that other fake professionals, again fake lawyers, fake accountants, that maybe some kind of a thing that is more mitigated than a doctor, I am not so sure. I mean I have talked to plenty of people who have talked to these cranks and frankly people acting criminally pursuant to the Restricted Occupations here, who have gotten themselves embroiled in Thai Tax stuff they really didn't need to be embroiled in; they have gotten themselves in Visa situations that frankly they didn't need to be in, or they put them into bad situations with regard to things like overstay and things of this nature.
Again, I get the impetus for foreigners to want to interact with another foreigner - in this case, for example this specific situation involved a Russian. I have to imagine this person was probably interacting primarily with other Russians; that tends to be the way it works here. For example, Anglos tend to interact with other Anglos. A good example is while we do have clients from outside of an American context that aren't American, they tend to mostly be English speakers, but predominantly our client base here at the firm tends to be American because Americans want to deal with Americans. I do get that. But when you come to Thailand, especially as just a member of the public, first of all, don't come to Thailand and pretend to be a doctor, that is probably a good idea or pretend to be a lawyer, pretend to be in some other profession. Also understand, even if you are a genuine professional from another jurisdiction, engaging in professional activities in Thailand without a license and in some cases, you can't get a license because only Thais can engage in those professions, it is not a good idea. You can end up in a criminal situation.
Meanwhile, who I am really talking to is members of the public out there. I do get the impetus to want to interface and interact with someone familiar, someone that speaks your own language, but understand many, many times the foreigners can be way more dangerous than the local Thais for exactly these reasons. They can be total fakes. Oftentimes they are operating completely outside of Thai Law and they can have detrimental consequences for members of the public.
