Thai Police Target Scams on Retirees

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing “Thai Police have targeted scammers who seem to be targeting retirees”. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com article is titled: Police raids target swindlers preying on American retirees. Quoting directly: "An Indian man and three Thai women were detained for questioning during police raids on 36 premises in four provinces on Tuesday targeting phone scammers who tricked 365 elderly Americans into sending them more than 3 billion Baht. It was a joint operation against international crime and involved the Royal Thai Police, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and US Secret Service."

Just from a law enforcement standpoint, these so-called phone scams, these phone bank scams AKA boiler rooms, whatever, Thailand takes them very seriously and often times will work together with international or non-local law enforcement for example in this case the FBI, because these folks seem to be targeting Americans and the hammer came down on these folks pretty darn hard. I suspect the criminal ramifications, the penalties associated with the violation of these laws assuming due process; we go through due process and they are convicted, they are looking at doing some serious time. Thai Immigration Officials are not, excuse me not Immigration, Thai Police are not interested in Thailand being a view to some sort of hub for international criminal activity and for this reason they seem to be very serious and assiduous in tracking down criminals who are targeting foreigners and basically putting them in jail seems to be their goal.

So the thing to take away from this video is one, understand retirees who had these scams, or might have had these scams pulled on them, Thai Police on top of everybody else are involved with this. Meanwhile, if you are looking to come to Thailand to set up some sort of scam operation, probably not a good idea, may be a good idea to move along.
