Thai Immigration Police Taking On More Law Enforcement Functions?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing, Thai Immigration Police and specifically kind of asking the question, "Are they kind of taking on more law enforcement functions?" As we have discussed in other videos, there has been a paradigm shift in my opinion within Thai Immigration especially roughly the past 7 or 8 years. In the past, Thai Immigration had a much more administrative kind of paradigm as an institution. The Thai Immigration Police System, Bureau had kind of a more administrative paradigm and recently it has become a much more law enforcement based.

Now certain extenuating circumstances in different contexts may lead to a situation where they do take on more of a law enforcement function and that appears to be the case. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, that is bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Myanmar asked to help catch Vichit murder suspect. Quoting directly: "Police Colonel Khemmachart Wattanaphakasem, Chief of Chiang Rai Immigration Office, said on Tuesday there were reports the suspect had purchased an air ticket to go to his hometown of Rangoon after fleeing through the Mae Sai Border checkpoint in Chang Rai. Police Colonel Khemmachart said he had sought cooperation from Myanmar officials to help find and catch the suspect. He expected an arrest soon."

Yeah, there seems to be not only international cooperation but as you can see, in an international context, Thai Immigration Police are going to have in certain cases, a role to play. So again, it is not really accurate to look at Thai Immigration Police and say "well they only deal with immigration". In some contexts, depending on the situation, depending on the case, you may see Thai Immigration actively involved in a much more law enforcement like function or even in an investigative function as seems to be the case here. So rather interesting to see the developments with respect to this. We will certainly keep people updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
