Extradition Cases in Thailand

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing extradition here in Thailand. For those who are unaware, when someone, for example they flee one jurisdiction where a crime has been committed and they are in another jurisdiction, if there is an Extradition Treaty between those two jurisdictions, it may be possible to rather smoothly remove that individual from the jurisdiction to which they have fled and return them to the jurisdiction in which a crime occurred.

I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, that is bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Thai hit-and- run driver to be extradited to US. Quoting directly: "A 57 year old Thai woman wanted for a fatal hit-and-run accident in the United States on Jan 1 has been arrested in Ratchburi and will be extradited for trial, police said." I am just redacting names. "(Name redacted) is a US citizen living in Oakland, a suburb of Detroit. She was present with the Deputy Police Chief at a news conference at the Royal Thai Police Office. Pol Gen Surachate", (that is Surachate "Big Joke" Hakparn) "Pol Gen Surachate said (name redacted) regretted the incident and was ready to enter the justice system in the US."

The whole story here, and I urge those who are watching this video go read that article in detail, a lot of information in there, good insights, but yeah this whole story was unfortunate and in my opinion pretty darn sad. It was sort of a hit and run if you will. Someone inadvertently it appears hit someone on the road; it looks like they got scared and they fled and they fled back here to Thailand. It looks like they were originally Thai. Now notwithstanding dual nationality, it appears that there has been cooperation between the US and the Thai Governments in returning this person back to the United States to face charges, perhaps to stand trial in the matter and to resolve it through the justice system there in the US.

Bear in mind, Thailand does cooperate with a number of other Governments in matters pertaining to extradition. Thailand is not a place where one can just flee and run away and never be seen again. It very much is a jurisdiction that cooperates with foreign law enforcement as and when necessary. So bear that in mind and understand that extradition can be part of the criminal procedure process here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
